Is It Ageing, Cataracts or Something Else?
Have you noticed yourself holding your phone further away to read messages? Perhaps restaurant menus seem smaller than they used to, or you need brighter light to read comfortably. Changes in eyesight become increasingly common after 40, but blurry vision isn’t always something you should simply put down to getting older.
Why does reading become harder after 40?
One of the most common age-related vision changes is presbyopia. This happens when the natural lens inside your eye gradually becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. You might find yourself stretching your arms to read, struggling with small print or experiencing tired eyes after close work. Reading glasses, multifocal lenses or other suitable vision correction options can often make everyday tasks more comfortable.
Could it be cataracts?
Cataracts are another common cause of changing vision, particularly as we get older. They develop when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, which can cause blurred vision, increased glare from headlights, faded colours or difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts generally develop gradually and can often be treated successfully with surgery when they begin affecting everyday activities.
Other eye conditions worth checking
Not all blurry vision is caused by presbyopia or cataracts. Changes in your spectacle prescription, dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes-related eye disease can also affect your sight. Some of these conditions develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages, which is why comprehensive eye examinations are important even when your vision seems reasonably good.
How often should you have your eyes checked?
For many adults, a comprehensive eye examination every two years is a sensible starting point, although your optometrist may recommend more frequent visits depending on your age, medical history and individual risk factors. If you experience sudden vision loss, new flashes or floaters, a dark shadow across your vision or a sudden significant change in eyesight, seek urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
