Contact Lens Intolerance / Dry Eye

What is it?

Contact lens intolerance occurs when lenses that once felt comfortable begin to cause dryness, irritation, redness, blurred vision or a gritty sensation. Dry eye is a common contributor. It can occur when your eyes do not produce enough tears, when tears evaporate too quickly or when the tear film is not stable enough to keep the eye comfortably lubricated. Symptoms may become worse during long periods of screen use, air-conditioning, windy weather, seasonal allergies or extended contact lens wear. Contact lens discomfort does not always mean you need to give up lenses altogether. In many cases, identifying the cause and adjusting the lens type, fit or wearing routine can make a significant difference.

How we can help

Our team can assess your eye health, tear film and current contact lenses to better understand what is causing the discomfort.

We will review how your lenses fit, how long you wear them and whether the lens material, design or replacement schedule still suits your eyes. We can also discuss your work environment, screen use, medications and daily routine, as these may all influence dryness.

Depending on our findings, we may recommend a different contact lens material, daily disposable lenses, modified wearing times or other options designed to improve comfort.

Where dry eye is contributing to the problem, we can explain practical management strategies and help you choose suitable products. The goal is not simply to tolerate your lenses, but to make wearing them feel comfortable and sustainable again.

Tips for your visit

Bring your current contact lenses, packaging, solutions and glasses with you. This gives us a clearer picture of the products you are using and how they may be affecting your eyes.

Make a note of when the discomfort begins, whether it affects one or both eyes and which environments make it better or worse.

Avoid wearing your lenses for longer than usual before the appointment. Following your normal routine helps us assess how your eyes respond under everyday conditions.

If your eyes become painful, very red, unusually sensitive to light or your vision suddenly changes, remove your lenses and seek prompt professional advice rather than waiting for the problem to settle on its own.
