Hard-to-Fit Contact Lenses

What is it?

Some eyes need more than a standard, off-the-shelf contact lens. You may be considered harder to fit if you have a high prescription, significant astigmatism, keratoconus, dry eye, an irregular corneal shape, previous eye surgery or a history of lenses that move, blur or become uncomfortable. In these cases, ordinary soft lenses may not provide the clarity, stability or comfort you need. Specialised contact lens designs can often create a better fit and more reliable vision. The key is careful assessment, accurate measurements and a lens selected for your eyes rather than simply your prescription.

How we can help

Our team can assess your eye shape, tear film, eye health and previous contact lens experience to understand why standard lenses have not worked well.

Depending on your needs, we may explore options such as toric or multifocal contact lenses.

Trial lenses allow us to evaluate comfort, movement, stability and visual performance before refining the fit. Small design changes can make a surprisingly large difference.

The process may involve several appointments, but our goal is to find a solution that gives you clearer vision, better comfort and more confidence. Being “hard to fit” does not necessarily mean contact lenses are off the table. It often means your eyes need a more thoughtful chair at the table.

Tips for your visit

Bring your current glasses, contact lenses, lens packaging, cleaning solutions and any previous eye reports or corneal scans.

Tell us about every issue you have experienced, including dryness, unstable vision, lenses rotating, discomfort, redness or lenses that become difficult to wear later in the day.

Think about when and where you want to use contact lenses, such as work, sport, social occasions or full-day wear. This helps us balance clarity, comfort and practicality.

Allow time for trial lenses and follow-up appointments. Specialised fitting is a careful process, and the best result is usually achieved through precise adjustments rather than a lucky first guess.
