Diabetic Eye Checks

What is it?

A diabetic eye check is a detailed examination that looks for changes diabetes may cause within the eyes. Over time, high blood glucose levels can damage the small blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye. This is known as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes can also increase the risk of other eye conditions, including diabetic macular oedema, cataracts and glaucoma. Early diabetic eye disease may develop without noticeable symptoms, and your vision can appear normal while changes are occurring. Regular eye checks are therefore an important part of managing diabetes and protecting your sight.

How we can help

Our team can carefully assess your vision and examine the health of your retina and other structures within the eye.

Depending on your needs, your appointment may include retinal photography, OCT imaging, pupil dilation and other tests to identify or monitor changes over time. We will explain the results clearly and compare them with previous examinations where available.

If we detect anything requiring closer attention, we can communicate with your GP, diabetes care team or ophthalmologist and arrange an appropriate referral.

The aim is to identify small changes early, before they have the opportunity to become much bigger problems. Think of it as scheduled maintenance for two pieces of equipment you cannot replace.

Tips for your visit

Bring your current glasses, medication list and any previous eye reports or scan results.

Let us know how long you have had diabetes, whether your blood glucose levels have changed recently and whether you also manage high blood pressure or cholesterol. These details can help us understand your overall risk.

Your pupils may need to be dilated during the examination. This can temporarily make your vision blurry and your eyes sensitive to light, so bring sunglasses and consider arranging transport if advised.

Do not wait for blurred vision or other symptoms before booking. Regular comprehensive eye examinations remain important even when your eyesight appears perfectly normal.
