Myopia Control

What is it?

Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision is usually clearer. It often begins during childhood and may continue to progress as the eyes grow. Myopia control is a personalised approach designed to slow this progression. While ordinary glasses can provide clear vision, myopia-control treatments also aim to reduce how quickly the prescription changes. Slowing myopia may help protect your child’s long-term eye health and reduce the likelihood of developing high myopia later in life.

How we can help

At Mundaring Spectacle Maker, we begin with a comprehensive eye examination to understand your child’s vision, eye health, prescription and risk of further myopia progression.

Depending on your child’s age, prescription, lifestyle and individual needs, we can discuss suitable myopia-management options. These may include specialised myopia-control spectacle lenses, soft contact lenses, overnight orthokeratology lenses or low-dose atropine eye drops in consultation with an appropriate prescribing practitioner.

There is no single solution that suits every child. We will clearly explain the available options, help your family select a practical treatment plan and arrange regular reviews to monitor vision changes, eye growth and treatment effectiveness.

Tips for your visit

Please bring your child’s current glasses or contact lenses, along with details of any previous eye examinations or prescriptions.

It can also help to consider whether there is a family history of myopia, how quickly your child’s prescription has changed, how much time they spend outdoors and how much close-up work or screen use is part of their typical day.

Your child may receive eye drops during their examination to help us measure their prescription more accurately. These can temporarily cause light sensitivity or blurred near vision, so bringing sunglasses and allowing a little extra time after the appointment may be helpful.
