Vision After Concussion

What is it?

A concussion can disrupt the way the eyes and brain work together, even when the eyes themselves appear healthy. Some people experience blurred or double vision, headaches, light sensitivity, difficulty focusing, eye strain or trouble tracking words across a page. Busy environments, screens, reading, driving or moving quickly between different visual tasks may also feel unusually tiring or overwhelming. These symptoms can affect school, work, sport and everyday confidence. Vision problems may be noticeable straight away or become clearer as normal activities resume. A detailed assessment can help identify which visual skills have been affected and what support may be appropriate.

How we can help

Our team can assess how your vision is functioning after a concussion.

We may look at focusing, eye movements, tracking, coordination, depth perception and how comfortably your eyes work together. We also take the time to understand which activities trigger symptoms and how your vision is affecting daily life.

Depending on the findings, support may include an updated glasses prescription, specialised lenses, prisms, filters, visual strategies or referral to other rehabilitation professionals.

Our goal is to reduce visual strain, explain what is happening clearly and help make reading, screen use, movement and other everyday activities feel more manageable.

Tips for your visit

Bring your current glasses, medication list and any reports from your doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, neurologist or rehabilitation team.

Make a note of your symptoms and when they occur. This may include headaches after reading, discomfort under bright lights, difficulty using screens, dizziness in busy spaces or trouble keeping your place on a page.

You are welcome to bring a family member, friend or carer to help provide background information and remember recommendations.

Concussion symptoms can be tiring, so let us know if you need a slower pace, breaks during the appointment or information explained more than once. No gold medal is awarded for pushing through discomfort.
